Water Walk for Women's Rights

Amizade Co-Sponsors Two Water Walks

Today, 1.1 billion people live without clean drinking water and 1.8 million people die annually from diseases relating to unsanitary water conditions. To raise awareness about these issues, Amizade Global Service-Learning co-sponsored two Water Walks for Women's Rights at the end of April. In conjunction with Pittsburgh Cares, the Pittsburgh Water Walk took place in Pittsburgh's Schenley Park on Friday, April 25. This Water Walk, which was attended by over 300 local high school students, included a service panel discussion, a two-mile walk in which students carried water in teams of two, and service-learning activities. On Saturday, April 26, Amizade cooperated with West Virginia University's Center for Civic Engagement and Friends of Decker's Creek to organize the Morgantown Walk. The Walk at WVU increased Amizade's visibility on the campus and engaged WVU students in a dialogue about international water issues and service opportunities.

The walks both demonstrated support for and solidarity with millions of people around the world struggling for access to clean and safe water resources. The Walks also fundraised toward the completion of a girls' dormitory at a vocational school at Amizade's site in Tanzania. The vocational school educates students on how to best manage community water systems, allowing for more efficient use of water resources in rural Tanzania.
