Program Description
This program offers students a course which examines the concept of civic engagement within the context of the long existing Catholic and Protestant conflicts in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The students will focus/learn how various communities both in the North and South are using methods of public talk to heal from wounds of the conflicts and work toward peace and reconciliation. The program will begin by examining different forms of dialogue and deliberation and how such may be used within communities to reach common ground, make difficult decisions, and perhaps reconcile harsh differences.

Program Learning Outcomes
At the end of global service-learning program and on-site experience, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate different forms of dialogue for resolving conflict and establishing common ground.
- Critically examine disputes from the point of view of the disputants.
- Demonstrate an ability to think systemically in conceptualizing and intervening in community conflicts.
- Recognize the influence of culture and history in shaping disputes and the solutions proposed by stakeholders.
- Apply the skills from various disciplines to provide services in public deliberation and sustained dialogue to local community members in the students' home communities.
- Articulate the limitations and strengths of different practice models when working with diverse communities including minorities, rural people, and different cultural groups.

Academic Details
Academic credits are awarded for this course through West Virginia University. The program is academically sponsored by the Division of Social Work for the following credit options:
