Program Description

This program will focus on the parallels of the WWII Holocaust and the 18th - 19th century Atlantic Slave Trade, as paramount examples of orchestrated genocide and forced migration of marginalized communities.  Through the integration of three academic courses, students will gain an understanding of the historical, social, and geo-political   circumstances that contributed to these two historical events, while connecting the history of these events with modern atrocities. 
 
The intercultural components of the program will begin in Ghana where the group will examine the implementation and consequences of the Atlantic Slave Trade, through its historical and contemporary implications on African cultures and communities.  The academic journey then continues in Germany where participants will examine the rise of the Nazi   Regime and implementation of the “final solution,” before traveling to Poland to bare witness to the Holocaust as it was orchestrated at the Auschwitz Concentration and Death Camps.
 
The program will include a broad range of academic lectures, guest speakers, field trips, group discussions and reflections that will effectively interlace the topics.  Students will gain further understanding and context by completing community service at the Holocaust Memorial Site and serving current Ghanaian residents in a rural community.

Academic credits are awarded for this course through West Virginia University. The program is academically sponsored by the History Department for the following nine credit options:
