Program Title: Non-Western World Literature
Academic Departments: English
Intercultural Location: Cape Coast, Ghana
Academic Instructor: Christopher Boettcher, Ph.D.
Service-Learning Facilitator: Jessica Friedrichs
--------------------
Program Description
This program pairs academic work in literature with service work taking
place in the Cape Coast region of Ghana. The academic work for the
program focuses on 'Non-Western' literature, proposing
a number of critical contexts in which the literature can be brought
into dialogue with contemporary theories of international development
and globalization. Global service-learning methodology will be enacted
through a special topics course with a focus on literature, tourism
and service. The integrated program is organized around five modules.
The activities planned for each module are intended to achieve a
number of objectives, including the preparation for the travel and
service work in Ghana. While in Ghana, the program participants will
assist in the construction of a village library. The ultimate aim
of the program is, therefore, to situate the study of Non-Western
literature in a real-world setting, producing thereby the opportunity
for rigorous cultural analysis and discussion of the broad implications
of literacy and cultural theory both for the people of Ghana and
in the students' home communities in America.

Program Academic Outcomes
Students who complete readings and participate
in this program will be able:
- To study together works of established
literary value from a number of world cultures and to discuss
the criteria of value used to make such a determination.
- To introduce
participants to general concepts of critical narratology, literary
criticism, and literary theory and to provide opportunities for
the participants to practice these techniques and hone their
skills of textual analysis and discussion.
- To help the participants
to critically consider the complexities of social relationships
and to gain insights into their own participation in the communities
to which they belong.
- To introduce participants to the concept
of global citizenship and to provide opportunities for them to
