Field Placements may take place any time of the year at Amizade’s partner sites in Bolivia, Ghana, Jamaica, and Tanzania. Students cooperate closely with faculty members to develop individualized syllabi that relate to International Development, Community Health, or Education. The syllabus that each student develops will include components specific to his or her own academic interest, the global service-learning and intercultural immersion experience, and the specific community partner site where the field placement occurs.

Field Placement credits are granted in recognition of the internship experience in conjunction with related reading, writing, and analysis. Students who successfully complete the experiences and academic coursework are eligible for credits in Professional Field Experience and Global Service-Learning.

The Professional Field Experience Credits recognize professionally relevant service experiences in International Development, Community Health, and Education. The credits are granted in Political Science, Africana Studies, or Service-Learning, depending on area of focus and student interest. While students may propose study and research topics that are predominantly oriented around a breadth of topics the credits at this time must be conferred within one of those three disciplinary and departmental structures. Each student works with a faculty mentor to determine the ideal disciplinary fit.

Professional Field Experience Credits may be conferred according to the following schedule, assuming full time work each week. Professional Field Experience Credits are always arranged in conjunction with Global Service-Learning Credits. The Global Service-Learning credits recognize students’ work to leverage their community service into deeper academic learning through related research, writing and reflection. The GSL credits additionally provide space for students to reflect on intercultural immersion, community-driven service, and global citizenship.

Credits may be awarded for satisfactory work as follows:

  • 98 days (Full Semester) = 12 Field Experience, 3 GSL
  • 73 days = 9 Field Experience, 3 GSL
  • 49 days = 6 Field Experience, 3 GSL
