Name: Daniel W. McNeil, Ph.D.
Faculty Biography: Dr. Dan McNeil is a Professor of Psychology at West Virginia University (WVU), and is an Eberly Professor of Outstanding Public Service. Dr. McNeil has a M.A. and a Ph.D. (1982) from the University of Alabama. He also was an undergraduate there, earning a B.S. from an interdisciplinary program, the New College, in 1977. Professor McNeil has been recognized nationally for his role as a mentor for students (e.g., American Psychological Association Award for Contributions to the Professional Development of Psychology Graduate Students in 1999) and student organizations (e.g., Psi Chi Psychology Honorary Outstanding Advisor Award, Southeastern Region, 2006-2007). His service activities also have been acknowledged with awards (e.g., Outstanding Service Award from the WVU Native American Studies Committee, 2003-2004). For the past four years, Professor McNeil has been the faculty advisor to the Psychology Club and the Psi Chi Psychology Honorary at WVU. In 2006-2007, Psi Chi at WVU was designated the outstanding chapter in the Southeastern region. Dr. McNeil teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on multicultural issues in Psychology. A licensed Clinical Psychologist, Professor McNeil is a clinical researcher in health psychology, including behavioral dentistry, studying the experience and expression of emotion, particularly anxiety and pain. His work is interdisciplinary; he has an additional academic appointment in the WVU Department of Dental Practice and Rural Health, and is core member of the WVU Native American Studies program. For the past twenty years, Professor McNeil has been engaged in research and service activities with American Indians, both western and eastern tribal groups.
