Life as Good Work:
Public Service Internship Seminar in Pittsburgh, PA

Location
Pittsburgh, PA

Description
GET OUT! Explore, serve and understand in Pittsburgh. The public service internship seminar is built around exploration of citizenship, service and good work through reading, writing, discussion and community engagement. Through the course, students explore public service in the context of the private, nonprofit, personal and government spheres. Improving the impact of service initiatives, integrating service with life and publicizing service efforts are topics covered. This course requires student initiative in coordinating public service internship placements, but the faculty member will cooperate with students in every way possible. Students who are already engaged in public service or work - whether in a nonprofit, as part of a foundation, or on a political campaign - are encouraged to enroll.

What is Public Service?

Pitt's Public Service Program http://www.pitt.edu/~cgs/public_service.pdf

The major in public service is a way for Pittsburgh's young adults to pursue meaningful and rewarding employment in government service, nonprofit management, the corporate environment, or as a citizen activist. Many of these classes get you into the community through a partnership with Amizade!

Pittsburgh, PA
Pittsburgh, with it's distinct neighborhoods and brightly colored bridges, resonates with a strong sense of American history. These bridges are not just physical - with an abundance of colleges and universities, Pittsburgh is often the place where people are building bridges to a career or a future through education. Still, many students do not know of the many opportunities to give back to Pittsburgh through meaningful service. Working with a community organization will provide students with a chance to apply course concepts and career skills to a real-life situation here in their own town. Life in Pittsburgh will expand in new ways as students become active participants in their community.
