Program Title: Introduction to International Aid Organizations
Academic Departments: Political Science - International Studies

Program Description
By using the backdrop of the Brazilian Amazon and the Bolivian Andes, this program provides students with a hands-on introduction to international development issues. Particular attention is given to the origin, practices, and problems associated with managing international agencies. It also examines the role these agencies play in such problem areas as international development, maintenance of human environment, and preservation of natural resources. Though open to all students, this course is specifically designed for students who may be interested in pursuing careers in international development.

Program Academic Goals

  1. To familiarize students with basic concepts in organizational theory.
  2. To familiarize students with the terminology and theoretical policy constructs used among government and international agencies to develop strategies in health, education, and the environment.
  3. To provide a contextual framework to allow students to conduct a comparative examination of social issues facing developing countries
  4. To allow students to participate in different cultural settings.

Academic Details
Academic credits are awarded for this course through West Virginia University. The program will fulfill 6 academic credits in Political Science:

  • Political Science Special Topics: Introduction to International Aid Organizations
    - 3 undergraduate credits (POLS 493)
    AND
  • Political Science Special Topics: Global Service-Learning
    - 3 undergraduate credits (POLS 493Z)
