
2006 Alternative Spring Break Opportunities
Amizade has 10 years experience coordinating college and university alternative
spring breaks. We have a wide variety of programs, locations and educational
opportunities to meet your group’s specific goals and we can customize
our programs to accommodate various group sizes, program dates and educational
activities. We are currently reserving group programs for 2006!
Below is a sampling of spring 2006 program opportunities:
Jamaica
Amizade has partnered with the
community of Petersfield in order to help connect volunteers to the unique
Jamaican culture and to assist the community in rebuilding after Hurricane
Ivan damaged and destroyed 50% of their community. Working along side
our program partners, Amizade volunteers will learn about community organizing
while contributing to efforts to repair community schools, centers and
homes, as well as tutoring at the local computer lab.

Mexico
This program offers participants
the opportunity to experience the rich complexity of the Mexican coast,
the contemporary issues arising from the on-going tourist developments
and the explosion of Mayan farmers immigrating to the region in search of
better paying jobs. The program takes place in Puerto Morelos, a small
fishing town located in the heart of this activity and development. Volunteer
opportunities are available with the Mayan schools and at the local cultural
center.

Navajo Nation, Arizona
The Navajo Nation
is the cultural home to the Navajo people, marked with beautiful sandstone
mesas, towering buttes, colorful canyons, and dramatic desert scenery. As
the Navajo people continue to successfully adjust to contemporary mainstream
circumstances, they face the increasing challenges of cultural identity,
educating their children, and economic development. Volunteers are currently
tutoring Navajo children at two elementary schools in Tuba City.

Montana (New Program Opportunity)
The
Greater Yellowstone Region of Montana is rich in history, wildlife and
geological wonderments. Participants
will experience parts of the region often overlooked by the majority of
visitors, have access to educational activities coordinated by the UD
Forest Service. Participants will help renovate the Blanding Station,
a US Forest Service building, located just minutes from Yellowstone National
Park.

Washington, DC
America is one of the
world's wealthiest nations, especially when it comes to the agriculture
that we produce. Yet enough food goes to waste each day to feed every hungry
adult and child living in this nation. Volunteer activities will be comprised
of food preparation, food distribution, childcare activities and clothing
distributing at three local soup kitchens.

Northern Ireland
The backdrop to this
program is Northern Ireland's stunning and fascinating beauty. Experience
the richness of both rural and urban settings, visit the neighborhoods
in conflict and discover Belfast, a city like no other in the world. This
program is focused on educating the volunteers on the history of the peace
process and it’s consequences
to the Irish culture.

Poland/Germany
This program offers
participants the opportunity to learn about the history and tragedy of
the Holocaust while volunteering to maintain Auschwitz as a world memorial
site. Participants have the opportunity to meet Holocaust survivors, taking
tours of the Museums of Auschwitz, Birkenau and Stamleger, and visit the
picturesque towns of Krakow and Oswiecim (Jewish center, cemetery, market
square) and Czestochowa (the most famous Polish monastery).
